Mission Statement

Urban Tilth cultivates an urban/suburban foodshed in west Contra Costa County, CA to help our community build a more sustainable, healthy, and just food system.

Description

All of our projects help develop local food production capacity in west Contra Costa County (the cities of Richmond, San Pablo, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Kensington, Pinole, Hercules, and unincorporated areas). We help manage production gardens at two elementary schools and have started Berryland on the Richmond Greenway. We are also engaged in mid-scale worm composting and compost tea brewing to generate funds to support our work. We offer the Farm Your Lawn service as a way to support our work and increase backyard gardening in the East Bay. Finally, we coordinate volunteer workdays at various sites throughout west Contra Costa County and publish a bimonthly e-newsletter. We have joined together with other individuals and organizations to form the 5% Local Coaltion. The 5% Local Coalition works to grow 5% of our own food supply within west Contra Costa County.
