Mission Statement

The mission of the African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation (AIRF) is to facilitate the effective transition of African immigrants to American society and to support their productive, sustainable integration into their new homeland.

Description

The African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation's (AIRF) goal is to empower African immigrants towards the goals of integration and selfsufficiency through culturally appropriate and supportive programming. The flagship program AIRF provides is the Catching Up Progr. (CUP)

CUP is intended for the thousands of schoolage African children living in the greater Washington DC Metro Area. Some children have experienced trauma due to war, poverty and family separation, which can be overwhelming obstacles to their adjustment in American public schools. For other children, formal education had never been a possibility or was a limited possibility. There are also those who struggle with balancing dual identities as African and American which has resulted in various types antisocial behavior. Given all these factors, CUP is designed to students advance at their own pace academically, emotionally and socially through individualized mentoring and tutoring.
