The de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University exists to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret objects of art and history for the educational and cultural enrichment of all people.
The museum shall:
present exhibitions that explore the work of artists, showcase a variety of cultures, provide thought-provoking experiences, and address issues of contemporary society;
continue the development and preservation of the permanent collection, thereby creating and offering an artistic and historic legacy for the community;
engage in University departmental collaborations, expanding the environment which fosters the integration of different forms of learning and the Jesuit ideals of reasoned and rigorous inquiry;
provide a welcoming and service-oriented atmosphere which encourages participation by a diverse audience; and
nurture a sense of pride and ownership among its principals, including the University, advisory board, staff, members, donors, and volunteers.
The de Saisset Museum is Santa Clara University's museum of art and history. Since its founding in 1955, the collection has grown to include nearly 6,000 prints, photographs, and other art media. The museum, which was accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1979, is also the caretaker of the University's California History Collection. The museum presents temporary exhibitions, often focusing on social or ethical issues, as well as lectures, concerts, and film series, for the educational and cultural benefit of the campus and local communities and other visitors. The de Saisset Museum also welcomes thousands of grade school children, seniors, special education groups, and other visitors each year for free, docent-led tours.
