Mission: SIDEWAYS creates & presents dance works that influence and inspire audiences to cognitively approach new perspectives, while establishing, promoting, maintaining a contemporary dance environment in the Atlanta community. SIDEWAYS enlightens individuals through educational programs & performances about the healthy benefits of dance in the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual forms of life, as well as entertaining audiences.
SIDEWAYS Contemporary Dance Company is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2006 by Charlotte Foster to inspire change and present social and political opinion through dance. SIDEWAYS is focused on spreading contemporary dance to residents of Atlanta and creating an environment that places ART as a high priority in society. SIDEWAYS presents two major concerts each season, Once Upon A Holiday (December) and Coexist: Life as it Should Be (June 2009), both held at 7 Stages Theater. Through performances across the southeast, SIDEWAYS has received impressive feedback from professional dance choreographers and critics including Ann Reinking (Fosse the Musical), Steve Rooks (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre), Wendy Perron (Dance Magazine), and Mia Michaels (So you Think you Can Dance). In addition to performances, SIDEWAYS reaches out to the community with their educational programs. Everyone is Artist is lecture/demonstration program for local schools, in which students learn how to express themselves through dance and become choreographers themselves. SIDEWAYS also hosts the SIDEWAYS Cares Night, in which SIDEWAYS donates over 100 tickets to their concert to local students and organizations in hopes of bringing new audiences to dance.
