To improve our district's emergency preparedness and response efforts though the recruitment, training, and tetention of volunteers who are willing to assist in a public health emergency response.

Description

After the events of September 11, 2001, the need to organize volunteers to help with disaster response became evident. In acknowledgment of this need and the tremendous spirit of volunteerism experienced after 9/11, the Citizen Corps was established. The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a component of the Citizen Corps.

The MRC:

· Creates teams of laypeople, medical and public health professionals to volunteer during emergencies and disasters, such as an influenza epidemic, a chemical spill, or an act of terrorism. Volunteers provide supple-mentary help to existing emergency response systems.

· Contributes to meeting the public health needs of the community throughout the year and offerseducation to improve the health of neighborhoods and communities.
