Mission Statement

Friends of the Louisville Free Public Library, a voluntary, non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, is made up of citizens who are interested in promoting the welfare and growth of their library, in enriching its resources, and in making its services better known to the community. As opposed to the Louisville & Jefferson County Library Advisory Commission, Friends of the Library does not provide guidance in running the library system. Instead, our focus is at the community level. Through our direct gifts, programs, and publications, our goal is to stimulate awareness and use of The Library, and to enhance library programs, materials, and services.

Description

Since its founding in 1977, Friends have helped fund Reading Power (in support of Jefferson County Public Schools' Everyone Reads four-year initiative), held over 50 book sales, 12 Kentucky Author dinners (honoring writers from across the Commonwealth and presenting a program featuring a nationally-known author), funded the Sara Bein Scholarships (for library staff education), numerous free-to-the-public lectures and initiated several family programs, including the current "Read Baby Read" program for newborns at University Hospital. Proceeds from the fundraising events go toward children's programs, library branches, the Library Foundation's 2000 Technology Campaign, Friends chapter grants, and public lectures and events.
