Mission Statement

Mental Health America (MHA) - founded in 1909 - is the nation’s leading community-based non-profit dedicated to helping all Americans achieve wellness by living mentally healthier lives. Our work is driven by our commitment to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including prevention services for all, early identification and intervention for those at risk, integrated care and treatment for those who need it--with recovery as the goal.

Advocacy: Throughout our 106 year history, we’ve been the only organization to prioritize the individual as we advocate for legislation that affects the lives of people with mental health conditions and their families. Our work supports public policies that promote mental health as part of overall wellness, consumer empowerment and an integrated, comprehensive and accessible system of care for all. Public Education: MHA and its affiliates work to change and improve public understanding, attitudes, and actions regarding mental health and mental illness through the development of public education campaigns and efforts that reinforce our Before Stage 4 philosophy. Services: With over 200 affiliates in 41 states, MHA is committed to bringing direct services and advocacy to communities around the country. MHA affiliates provide a range of services based on local community need while working towards influencing public policy to assure access to fair and effective mental health treatment.
