Mission Statement
The mission of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum is to promote an appreciation and understanding of Santa Barbara regional history and the importance of history in general.
To accomplish this mission, the Museum:
- Collects, preserves, interprets and exhibits the diverse material culture of the Santa Barbara region;
- Educates children and adults through exhibits, lectures, tours and classroom activities; and
- Encourages research, scholarship, and publication of historical materials.
Description
The Santa Barbara Historical Museum is a City of Santa Barbara Registered Historic Landmark located in the El Pueblo Viejo Historic District. Founded in 1932, the Historical Museum is the primary repository and interpreter of our collective cultural heritage and ethnic diversity. The Museum captures the sweep of human imagination, exploration, and inquiry, revealing what we know about ourselves and the world around us. The facility houses over 80,000 objects in its collections, and welcomes over 65,000 people annually of all ages and backgrounds in Museum and outreach activities. The on-site research library, with its vast archival collections, is a major resource for students and scholars. The Santa Barbara Historical Museum is one of the only remaining free museums in the area ensuring accessibility for everyone.
