ABOUT THE BURLINGTON COUNTY COUNCIL, BSA
The Council is the largest provider of youth services in Burlington County. We provide outstanding program opportunities for over 12,000 youth and 2,500 adult volunteers. The Council was originally chartered in 1925 and incorporated by the State of New Jersey in 1935. A volunteer Board of Trustees helps to oversee the operations of the Council.
MISSION & VISION STATEMENTS The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
The Council is committed to providing an outstanding Scouting experience to youth and adult volunteers throughout Burlington County. It is the Council's goal to continue to be recognized as "The Premier Provider" of exceptional youth programs throughout Burlington County.
AREA SERVED The Council serves all of Burlington County with the exception of Bass River and Washington Township.
MEMBERSHIP During 2004, over 12,000 youth were served in the Scouting program in Burlington County. Over 2,500 adults were registered in the program.
CHARTERED PARTNERS We have over 110 sponsoring organizations who have joined us in partnership to provide Scouting programs to the youth of our communities. These sponsors include religious institutions; PTAs; civic, service, and fraternal organizations; businesses & industry; and community groups. Our sponsors provide meeting facilities, financial support, and volunteer leadership to make each unit successful.
The Burlington County Council is comprised of the sponsoring organizations and their volunteer Scouters. Each sponsor appoints a Chartered Organization Representative who is a voting member of the Council and an automatic member of their respective District Committee.
COUNCIL BUDGET AND FINANCES The Council's operating budget for 2005 is just over $1 million. It is prepared by the Council's professional staff, reviewed by the Executive Board's Finance Committee, and approved by the full Executive Board. volunteers Council Scout Executive. The Council's financial position is audited annually and reviewed during the year by the Finance Committee and the Executive Board.
All Scouters, Parents, and supporters of Scouting are encouraged to participate as a Friend of Scouting each year. As Scouting continues to grow, the need for funds to support the Council's program initiatives is also increasing.
EXECUTIVE BOARD The administration of the Council is the responsibility of the Executive Board, under the leadership of the Council President and his/her Officers. Board members are leading citizens of the county, providing guidance, setting policies, and securing financial support.
DISTRICTS and DIVISION The Council is divided into two districts and an Exploring Division to better facilitate service and support to our 160 plus units.
Each District/Division has a District Committee which is composed of dedicated volunteers and the District Executive. The operating committees of the district are in activities, advancement, camping, membership, training, finance, and manpower. All of these committees are run by volunteers to assist unit Scouters. The Chartered Organization Representative from your unit is also an automatic member of the District Committee and is invited to attend their monthly meetings.
The main unit service group is called the Commissioners Staff. They provide direct regular service (visits) to all units in the district. Roundtables (a "Hands On" practical program session) - for Cub and Scout leaders are offered monthly by the Commissioners Staff. Districts are led by the District Chairman, District Commissioner, and District Executive, also known as the "Key 3.
QUAKESEN DISTRICT
(Also called District 3) serves the Northern and Eastern parts of the County - Mansfield, Bordentown, Chesterfield, Burlington, Columbus, Roebling, Indian Mills, Medford, Lumberton, Hainesport, Fort Dix, McGuire AFB, Wrightstown, Pemberton Twp., Browns Mills, Vincentown, Chatsworth, Tabernacle, Medford Lakes, Vincentown and Eastampton, Westampton, Mt. Holly, and North Hanover.
MAHALALA DISTRICT (Also called District 4) serves the Southern and Western parts of the County - Marlton, Mount Laurel, Moorestown, Cinnaminson, Palmyra, Riverton, Delran, Riverside, Delanco, Maple Shade, Beverly, Edgewater Park and Willingboro.
EXPLORING DIVISION Exploring is served on a county level by a volunteer Exploring Committee and Service Team and Exploring Executive. They provide similar services as are found in the district.
PROFESSIONAL STAFF Professional staff members, commissioned by the personnel division of the National Council BSA, are employed by our Council to advise the adult volunteer Scouters in Burlington County Council. The health of our units and growth of our movement are the top priorities of every executive. At present, we employ five professionals.
SCOUT SERVICE CENTER The Service Center is located at 693 Beverly-Rancocas Road opposite the Westampton Municipal Complex. It is easily accessible from Interstate 295 using Exit 45A (toward Mt. Holly). After exiting I-295, continue West to the second traffic light. Turn left and then immediately bear left to the Council Service Center. The Center houses the Council's Trading Post, professional and clerical offices, and meeting facilities.
HOURS The Service Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and Wednesday 8:30 am - 8:00 pm (except July & August). We have a full line of Scout and other related items. All major credit cards are accepted with a $25 minimum purchase. Special orders are required to be paid in advance. The Trading Post is also open on the evenings of roundtables, for your convenience.
DISTRIBUTORS The Council operates a Trading Post at its Service Center in Westampton. It carries uniforms, patches, awards, supplies, and Scouting accessories. A shopping list can be created at scoutnet.scouting.org. Anything from the Scout catalog can be ordered for you through the Trading Post at the Scout Service Center.
COUNCIL VISITATION During the day, many volunteers need to consult with a Scouting professional. It is recommended that you call ahead and set an appointment, because the executives are in the field the majority of the time.
