Mission Statement

The primary objective of The Animal Shelter Society is to house, feed, and care for the area's abandoned dogs and cats until they are adopted by responsible new owners.

Last year, the Shelter took in over 4458 animals and adopted out 1335 of them.

Secondarily, the Shelter focuses on the development of spaying and neutering programs to reduce the growing overpopulation of animals, thus preventing continued instances of abandoned dogs and cats.
In 2003, The Shelter broke ground to expand the building further and add a surgical suite. This project is completed and open to provide the much needed space for our Veterinarian and his staff to do their work.

Description

We are a low-kill shelter working toward no-kill. We have have active rescue, adoption, and spay/neuter programs.

Our History:
The Muskingum County Humane and Animal Society was incorporated in 1959 by a small group of Zanesville ladies. In 1964, the Society became a corporation with an IRS 501(c)(3) designation. The first shelter building, on Licking Road, was constructed in 1968 and expanded in 1984.

In 1988, a charity bingo license was obtained. The resulting steady boost to the funding of the Shelter enabled the establishment of a building fund and the hiring of four employees. This allowed the Shelter to begin operating regularly on a seven day a week schedule.

Over almost 40 years, the shelter's leaders have focused on raising the necessary funds and spending them judiciously to care for the area's abandoned animals. Contributions from so many in this community have allowed the Shelter to operate--almost completely debt-free--since its inception.

In 1998, the board of directors confirmed the need for an endowment fund. A goal of $1.5 million has been established. To date, almost one-third of those funds have been raised. Fund raising activities that historically focused on the building fund are now directed at increasing the endowment fund.
