Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide a variety of training programs, street outreach, and direct assistance to at-risk teens, teen mothers, low income families and the homeless who face multiple health, social and economic challenges.

SCLO believes that every individual, especially youth, should be treated with the utmost respect and deserve to be given the tools and support to enable them to face life challenges directly and successfully.

Description

Second Chance-Last Opportunity (SCLO) is a community-based, 501©3, intervention, prevention, and referral center that was founded in 1995 by April Glasco, a local resident who continues as Executive Director today. SCLO is located in the Newtown section of Sarasota, Florida where the average household income is $10,000 or less per year, according to the latest census figures. Over the past 12 years, SCLO has served over 10,000 low income or homeless clients with multiple social and economic problems in both Sarasota and Manatee Counties. SCLO aims to help this often invisible population reach their potential and build a future for themselves and their families through life skills and job preparation training, youth programs, counseling, and food, clothing and shelter referral.

The main core of the organization is the programs offered that provide life skills to both adults and youth, preparing them to become productive, independent citizens and gain a sense of self-worth. In addition to the Life Management Training that is at the heart of the organization, the agency distributes food, clothing, baby supplies, holiday gifts and food baskets. SCLO has deep roots in the community enabling it to bridge the gap between partnering agencies and the most vulnerable in the community.
