Mission Statement
The mission of Nurses for Social Justice is to encourage social justice advocacy in nursing by:
1) educating nurses on social justice issues that affect public health,
2) providing resources and opportunities for nurses wishing to participate in the political process,
3) establishing a support network of nursing professionals and students with a common vision for the future of our patient population and the nursing profession.
Description
Nurses for Social Justice is a grassroots organization comprised of nursing professionals and students seeking to promote social justice. Social justice advocacy is one of the essential roles of the professional nurse. Nurses are on the front lines of caring for patients with difficulty accessing health care due to lack of transportation and communication barriers. Nurses feel frustration when patients are not able to receive medically necessary treatment due to lack of finances or insurance coverage. Nurses know that the stress of living with racism, sexism, and poverty affects health status. Nurses are aware that the responsibility for educating women about the risks and benefits of abortion and contraception lies with the medical professionals, and not the politicians.
