Mission Statement

The mission of the Hispanic Mentoring Program is to provide the framework for supportive relationships between Latino students in grades 4-8 and adult mentors. The goals focus upon improving English language skills, assisting with academic success, reducing absenteeism, and preparing students for post-secondary education or career training. The program plans to prepare students to make constructive choices, contribute to society, and reach their potential to live successful adult lives.

Description

This program represents a partnership between Douglas-Cherokee and the Hamblen County Department of Education. A mentor will be matched with one Hispanic child in grades 4 - 8. The children are learning to speak English better and they need help with succeeding in school. During the school year, the mentoring will occur at one of six area schools, or at supervised after-school programs, or at other designated and supervised sites. The mentors meet with their child one day, one hour a week.

The schools that we serve are Fairview-Marguerite Elementary School, Hillcrest Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School, Meadowview Middle School, and West Elementary School. All mentoring activities will occur during the day in a supervised setting.
