Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area(LSS/NCA) began serving the Washingnton Metropolitan area in 1917.
The mission of LSS/NCA is to provide services that offer hope and provide for the well being of children, individuals, families, and communities in need regardless of religion, race, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, age, or ethnicity; assist congregations in identifying and responding to local and regional community needs; and promote social justice, individual self-sufficiency, and the inherent worth of each human being.
Compassion. Community. Collaboration. As an organization, LSS/NCA has embraced these three principles for nearly a century. Founded in 1917 when a number of local Lutheran congregations joined together to provide food, clothing, and shelter to families in need, LSS/NCA has continually evolved with the consistent commitment to protect our most vulnerable neighbors. From the beginning, we have tailored our programs to respond to emerging challenges in our neighborhoods. Whether sheltering a family during the Great Depression, welcoming a displaced Vietnamese refugee to America in the 1970s, or most recently offering fellowship, support, and information to caregivers who are tending to aging and ill loved ones, our services are founded directly in the needs of the community.
