Description

With your help we can develop a sustainable academic pipeline for youth from cradle to college, college to career and back to their community.

Our goal is to prepare underserved youth to graduate a four-year college, achieve both their educational and career dreams, and ultimately become productive members of their communities. Additionally, we aim to empower parents and concerned adults to advocate for their child and successfully navigate the educational system. We do this by including tutoring, mentoring, field trips, parent/student advocacy empowerment meetings, cultural celebrations, academic planning and success tracking sessions.

TVM wraps culturally responsive approaches into our model and no other programs exist in Union City that combine the following methodology with Afro-centric roots:

1. Strength-based Approach - TVM taps into the gifts and talents that children need for success.
2. Prevention/Intervention - Being Black is not a risk factor and, through proactive engagement, intervention is not a necessity.
3. Service Tracking - TVM maintains connection during the entire academic journey of the student while other programs are limited.
4. Holistic Community Engagement - We believe that the family, city, local businesses, residents and school district all have a stake in influencing positive life outcomes of a child.

TVM is more than just an academic after school program for basic homework help. In addition to tutoring, TVM empowers their students with real world knowledge, such as money investments and savings. The directors of TVM care deeply about their students and their academic success and it shows through the work that they are so passionate about. TVM uses tracking systems to understand where the student is struggling and could use support. As a volunteer, I also feel as though I am cared about by both the directors as well as by the students. If you want to make a direct impact on young middle schoolers lives, I would highly suggest working with TVM!

I volunteered for the better part of a school year with TVM. I was really impressed by the TVM leadership; their continued commitment and drive to have the program succeed was inspirational. (The only reason I'm not continuing as a volunteer is because I moved out of the area.) I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with and tutoring the students. It was really rewarding to see the "light come on" as they would begin to understand a specific concept that we would work on. I also can't stress enough how important I think it is to work on addressing and trying to close "the gap" that exists in this area. This is an organization and a cause that means a lot to me and that I highly, highly recommend!
