Mission Statement

The Chinatown Community Learning Center serves residents of Salinas by providing an enriching place where people from all walks of life (especially the homeless and marginalized) can Learn, Reconnect, and Heal.

Description

The Chinatown Renewal Project is in collaboration between California State University Monterey Bay, the Salinas Downtown Community Board, and shareholders in the Chinatown community; including various houses of worship, non-profit agencies, community members, property owners and businesses. The project aims to foster a thriving community for the Chinatown residents who currently find themselves homeless, impoverished and cut off from the greater Salinas population.

The Chinatown Community Learning Center offers free broadband access to the residents of Chinatown and provides over a dozen computers for public use. Furthermore, the Center functions as a classroom where residents can gain job readiness skills, basic to advanced computer literacy skills, nutritional/dietary education, conflict resolution skills and more. Classes, workshops, clinics, support groups and other services available to our needy population are provided by a variety of CSUMB Professors, CSUMB students, students from visiting universities, local service providers, community volunteers, and Learning Center staff.
