Mission Statement

The City of Long Beach Magnolia Senior Center has been chosen as a site for The Selfhelp/Kimmel Virtual Senior Center, both as a programming site, and recipient of technology for their identified homebound seniors. Using video chat technology, homebound seniors can see, hear and communicate with the class facilitator & other seniors through broadcasts from on-site courses, as well as from other centers throughout the United States. Classes inform and entertain; they are interactive and can be discussion-based; they feature entertainment or contain an activity like gentle exercise. This program increase wellness and enhances the quality of life for homebound seniors.

Microsoft Corp., the City of New York and Selfhelp Community Services Inc. came together and formed the Virtual Senior Center, an innovative public-private partnership and demonstration project that is showing how cities can use technology to revitalize senior centers and enhance the lives of homebound seniors. The Virtual Senior Center uses computer, video and Internet technology to create an interactive experience for homebound seniors that reduces social isolation and gives them better access to community services.

The Magnolia Senior Center is currently recruiting volunteers who would be willing to facilitate an interactive 45-60 minute class for vital, homebound seniors to engage them in meaningful ways. Volunteers can lead a class on a topic that you are passionate about: Music and Art appreciation, Social Sciences, History, Health/Wellness, News and Politics, Exercise, Computer training, Language Arts, Interactive Games, Storytelling, can be discussion-based, an activity (like a chair exercise class) or performance-based (singing/musical instrument) with some discussion.

Flexible class scheduling includes weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, short term series or sporadic classes. Weekday, evening or weekend options are also available and can be conducted right from your home, office computer or the Magnolia Media Center.

Volunteers are required to be at least 18 years of age, have the ability and interest in facilitating an interactive virtual class, be friendly, sensitive and enjoy relating to seniors, and possess basic technology skills.
