Mission Statement

The mission of the Colburn Earth Science Museum is to foster an appreciation for the earth and its resources and environments through exhibits, educational programming and the care of its collection.

Description

The Colburn Earth Science Museum, a downtown fixture since 1960, began as the Colburn Gem and Mineral Museum. Still home to the amazing collection of gems and minerals that have made it world-renowned, the Colburn expanded its mission in 2002 to include other Earth sciences. With all-ages, interactive, hands-on exhibits about geology, plate tectonics, meteorology the history of mining in Western North Carolina and meteorology and climatology, the Colburn Earth Science Museum is a place where the Earth comes alive. Located on the lower level of Pack Place in the heart of Asheville near restaurants and shops, a visit to the Colburn is an adventure of discovery the whole family will enjoy.
