Mission Statement

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum is the art museum of Washington University in St. Louis and one of three units of the University's Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. As a teaching museum with a fine art collection, it is charged with fostering the University's educational mission and commitment to excellence through the exhibition, publication, development, and preservation of visual art, for today's world and for future generations, according to the highest professional standards. The Museum is dedicated to providing an open and dynamic learning environment through meaningful and direct interaction with works of art that encourages cross-disciplinary exchange, critical thinking, visual literacy, and social and intellectual inquiry into the connections between art and contemporary life. The Museum is committed to serving regional, national, and international audiences while advancing academic scholarship within the University community.

The Kemper Art Museum features cutting-edge special exhibitions, exceptional educational resources, and an outstanding collection of 19th, 20th- and 21st-century European and American art. A stimulating and unique site to experience art, culture, and education in St. Louis. On Washington University's Danforth campus near the corner of Skinker & Forsyth Blvds.
