Mission Statement
The Cultural Arts Division provides opportunities for people to participate in cultural arts activities throughout the community.
Staff manages two of the City's most popular summer festivals: the Ethnic Arts Festival and the Lakeshore Arts Festival. Staff also coordinates the free Starlight Concert Series (see photo at left). Concerts are held at James Park, Dawes Park and Twiggs Park on Tuesday or Thursday evenings. Several very popular summer arts camps for youth and teens are held at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center and at local schools.
Description
The City of Evanston began its very own Ethnic Arts Festival in 1986. Each July, the Festival transforms the idyllic lakefront Dawes Park, Sheridan Rd. at Church St., into a global village. Surrounded by the flags of more than 100 nations honoring the diversity of our planet, attendees experience the colors, sounds, and aromas of world cultures. Every continent is represented in song, dance, spoken word, visual arts and food.
There is live music, dance performances and art and craft work of juried artists. People can also learn the folkdance of a far-away country and explore the intriguing spices and seasonings of new ethnic foods.
The Ethnic Arts Festival is presented by the City of Evanston Cultural Arts Division. The program is partially supported by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
