Mission Statement

We envision a diverse and vibrant Brookline, where an ethic of philanthropy, equity, volunteerism and civic engagement ensures that everyone's basic needs for social services, education and housing are met, the arts flourish, and the environment thrives. Mission BCF exists to promote a strong, engaged and inclusive community. We: • identify and raise awareness of community needs, • create forums for public dialogue and problem solving, • inspire philanthropy and volunteerism, • advance equal access to community resources and opportunities, and • strengthen and sustain local nonprofits and organizations.

Description

BCF serves Brookline in many ways: • Making grants to community-based organizations. • Bringing people and institutions together to identify and solve problems. • Mobilizing people to take advantage of resources. • Inspiring residents, local businesses, and outside foundations to donate time, money, and resources. • Increasing permanent funds for the benefit of future generations of Brookline residents. Why a community foundation? Brookline has the same needs as our urban neighbors, yet other funders such as United Way and the Boston Foundation do not provide funding in our community. The Brookline Community Foundation exists to fill these gaps. Due to the ability to act quickly, and an in-depth understanding of their community, community foundations have become one of the fastest growing segments in the field of philanthropic giving. The Brookline Community Foundation is one of over 700 community foundations across the nation. By listening to the community and partnering with other groups we are able to put your donations to work, solve problems, and make a positive impact on Brookline. In 2006 alone, the Brookline Community Foundation awarded $546,000 to provide for the basic needs of our most vulnerable residents, to increase cultural opportunities and address environmental concerns, to support after school and early literacy programs, and to strengthen Brookline's nonprofit organizations.
