Mission Statement

Lend for America helps student leaders to build their communities through the creation of campus microfinance institutions (Campus MFIs). Our national platform supports students practicing microfinance in the U.S. by providing training, networking, funding, and research. We believe campus MFIs are a game-changer for the country because:

  • they offer students a chance to make a real difference beyond traditional community service which aren't satisfying to results-driven students
  • they equip students with skills to solve real-life problems
  • they give students real responsibilities that last beyond the academic calendar

Description

Lend for America is a national membership organization that guides college students in starting campus-based microfinance groups (Campus MFIs) in the United States.

Across the U.S., students are launching Campus MFIs to offer affordable financial services to low-income individuals. For example, the University of North Carolina's Community Empowerment Fund helps homeless people save money they can use to fund apartment security deposits. At Yale University students have built the only organization in New Haven, CT that offers training and microloans to small business owners.

Lend for America currently has 24 campuses in its membership and is quickly growing to reach new communities. In addition to connecting and supporting existing Campus MFIs, it incubates new programs through its yearly fellowship.
