ADHC COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER - GENERAL SUPPORT Lighthouse Guild is the leading not-for-profit vision + healthcare organization with a longstanding heritage of serving the needs of people who are blind or visually impaired, as well as those with multiple disabilities or chronic medical conditions. We help people of all ages who are at risk for, or are experiencing, vision loss. We provide services, research and education, and advocate to help people with low vision and blindness. Summary: The Adult Day Health Care Program (GuildCare), which provides healthcare and recreation for multicultural seniors with vision loss, multiple developmental disabilities, and chronic medical conditions, is looking for a volunteer to support all aspects of the general operations of this Program. Location: 250 West 64 th Street, New York, NY 10023 Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direction of the program director or designee the Program Assistant will: Assist with daily arrival and departure of clients. Greet clients and direct them to daily activities. Serve as a human guide/escort within the building and on field trips when necessary. Assist with daily recreational programs as needed. Help maintain an orderly and welcoming place for clients. Assist with food preparation and service (breakfast, lunch). Qualifications: Excellent verbal communication skills, as well as customer service skills, required. Must be comfortable working with people who are visually impaired and developmentally disabled. Must be mature, reliable, courteous, have good judgment and be professional. The ability to understand and follow instructions/directions is required. Must be organized and able to work in an environment with priority changes. Able to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of a team. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred but not required. Details Of Service Opportunity: This is an on-going opportunity that begins upon approval by staff members. Candidates must be available at least 1 day Monday - Fridays from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm or can serve five days per week. A health form and proof of immunizations must be completed by physician. All candidates must be tested for TB prior to volunteering. The attire during this position is business casual. The Reading Service Program connects a visually impaired person with a reading volunteer who helps accessing otherwise often inaccessible written and electronic materials. We provide programming in a vision sensitive environment that enables people with vision impairment attain their goals and live independently. This opportunity is ideal for a problem solver, with an outgoing personality, and strong computer skills who understands how to get things done. Location: 250 West 64 th Street, 6 th Floor New York, NY 10023 Opportunity Summary: This position helps implement and administer the Reading Services Program by matching clients and volunteers. The responsibilities will range from outreach to potential clients; identifying volunteers and candidates for the program; and recruiting and placing volunteers to support the client’s reading needs and volunteer’s desire to help the client. In addition, this position will post volunteer reading opportunities; coordinating schedules, receiving onsite clients and volunteers; mediate the reading pair relationship, manage client and volunteer info in databases and CRM; overall making sure pairs work well together. Principle duties and responsibilities: Manage the pairing of clients and volunteers. Conduct research and outreach efforts to get volunteer readers. Completing intake and assessment of client’s needs and volunteer’s qualifications Answer Volunteer Center phones. Receive onsite volunteers and clients. Manage cancellations and makes appropriate notifications. Identify readers to fill vacancies. Escorts visually impaired clients if needed. Distributes assistive devices for reading. Update schedules and manage client and volunteer databases and CRM Fills in as reader to visually impaired client if necessary. Support the administrative needs of the department and duties as assigned. Qualifications: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Good interpersonal and telephone skills with the ability to correspond with clients and volunteers consistently via telephone and face to face communications. Able to handle confidential information. Able to arrive on time and be ready to work. A strong customer service orientation, good interpersonal skills. Basic to Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access required. The ability to take and follow instruction and apply critical thinking skills. Experience managing a project independently to completion required. The ability to exhibit excellence in the execution of your responsibilities required. Details of the Opportunity: This is an in-person assignment. Interns/staff/volunteers must be fully vaccinated and show proof of vaccination to serve. The Lighthouse Guild follows Covid-19 protocols which include mask wearing in client areas. The ideal candidate is available approximately 20 - 25 hours per week and will be present in the office 3 or 4 days per week for at least 5 hours per day.
