Some people think volunteering for a crisis/suicide hotline sounds depressing. Nope. It's incredibly empowering - I help people, but I can't do the work for them. All I can do is listen. And I love knowing I'm making a huge, huge, HUGE difference in someone's life.
A big reason I was drawn to CrisisLink was the super flexible schedule. If you're working full time and have a family/social life, it's hard to work in time to volunteer. CrisisLink asks for 3 hours a week, and they'll let you swap shifts when you need to, so it's easy to work volunteering into my life.
The training was amazing. I'm a MUCH better listener now than I was before - and I didn't think I needed improvement. I went to college, I have friends, I work well with others. But the training challenged my way of thinking, which was tough, but wow... huge payoff. I love it here.
