Mission Statement
Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Farm Project’s (ANV) mission is to elevate life for youth and their families in Oakland and beyond by challenging oppressive dynamics and environments through urban farming and access to the natural environment. Founded and led mainly by women and People of Color, ANV engages youth and families in safe and creative outdoor spaces in Oakland and the East Bay, CA. ANV strengthens young people’s understanding of nutrition, food production, healthy living, the natural environment and strengthens their ties to their community.
Description
W e partner with low and fixed-income residents in the East Bay, particularly people of color, who are striving to eat and live healthier despite systemic and structural barriers. Based in the environmental justice community of West Oakland, we have spent the last 20 years working towards a more just and equitable food system where everyone is nourished and has access to healthy, high quality, and culturally celebrated food.
Since 2001, we have built over 500 backyard and community gardens, produced 350,000 pounds of nutrient rich food, trained thousands of people in organic gardening practices and environmental stewardship, and produced over 200 educational workshops. In 2016, after deep community involvement in planning and design, we launched our 1.4 acre West Oakland Farm Park. A former brownfield site, the farm park is now a community hub for environmental awareness, sustainable agriculture, and health education.
