Mission: Helping Youth Excel!
The West Dallas Community Centers Inc. mission is to strengthen our community through educational programming and training, economic and social development and cultural awareness. West Dallas Community Centers Inc. makes an IMPACT.
West Dallas Community Centers Inc. (WDCC), a private nonprofit organization was founded in 1932 at a time of extreme poverty, brought on by the Great Depression. Distinguished city fathers R.L. Stemmons, Trammel Crow, Marvin D. Love, Clint Murchison III, plus many other distinguished leaders founded the organization with the desire to alleviate some of the problems the community was plagued with. For decades, West Dallas struggled with a variety of ills, including aged and deteriorating housing, crumbling infrastructure, low performing schools, high unemployment, virtually no economic development, and residents with low educational attainment levels.
Originally known as West Dallas Social Center, the organization started off by serving the community with a once-a-week medical clinic sponsored by local physician volunteers. In 1934, the services were expanded to include family recreation and to provide moral support to families living in the community. Eventually services extended into the local public school system, to provide in-school positive directions programming. The focus of WDCC after-school services also evolved from athletic and recreational to a greater emphasis on educational activities that include academics, arts, and culture. Today’s services include programming in drug prevention, truancy intervention, W.A.R on Illiteracy, parenting education, college preparatory services, Financial Literacy, mentoring, life skills and referrals to other community resources.
West Dallas Community Centers has taken a proactive role in turning the community around by focusing on youth development and family involvement through a plethora of academic and life enrichment activities. WDCC also partners with other organizations such as the City of Dallas, Dallas Housing Authority, The Volunteer Center of North Texas, Wells Fargo, Big Thought, plus many others, in order to provide referrals and links to resources that enhance our services and increase the opportunity for success. While a lot has changed over the years, including a downturn in the number and location of centers, the one thing that has always been consistent is West Dallas Community Centers Inc.’s commitment and mission to make a positive IMPACT.
