Brookview School

Mission Statement

Mission: Brookview School exists to educate children based on the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori in an environment of academic excellence that nurtures each child's growth into a whole, responsible and integrated person. That mission thrives on support from a multi-cultural, diverse and dedicated community of teachers, staff, parents and friends who work together to awaken in each child a spirit of inquiry, exploration, independence, resilience, adaptability, self-esteem, service and respect for all people.

Brookview School is a nonprofit, independent Montessori community established in 1976 by a group of parents and educators wishing to offer their children a practical, holistic education. From infancy through eighth grade, Brookview provdes academically challenging, integrated Montessori instruction with an emphasis on environmental, cultural and artistic awareness. Led by their own curiosity and guided by their teachers, students engage in inquiry, investigation and discovery. Our classes are structure in three-year age groups, allowing children to progress with fewer social transitions. This offers the younger child someone to emulate and older children an opportunity to refine and practice social and leadership skills. In keeping with Montessori traditions, children also practice and develop conflict resolution skills. We have found a child grows more adept at resolving conflict as he or she learns to voice concerns, listen to others, achieve compromise and make decisions. Our ten-acre campus is located along the shore of the St. JOseph River in Benton Harbor Michigan, surriounded by woods, prairies and wetlands. It includes a small vegetable garden, a small animal farm, and varied habits for exploration and learning. The school has a computer lab, library and community room with stage for performances and gatherings.
