Mission Statement

To be a safe haven and relationship building by, with, and for youth that is inclusive of GLBTQ youths and youth of color.

Description

Broadway United Methodist Church’s Youth Lounge was born out of a desire to respond to various forms of discrimination faced by young GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Queer) persons in our neighborhood; many of the youth with whom we work are homeless. Our goals have been providing a safe haven and relationship building by, with, and for GLBTQ youths and/or youth of color. Our prayer is that, by being present to the youth, providing them with a safe place of trust and relationship, we can be a vehicle for changed lives of hope and possibility.

Our relationship-based ministry is built on love, justice, and mercy that stand against injustice faced by so many of the youth in our community. The relationships built between youth and volunteers builds confidence and skills in all participants involved in Youth Lounge. In addition, relationships built with the youth have given the congregation as a whole a better understanding of the ongoing needs of youth within our community - allowing participants, volunteers, and the congregation to become better advocates in addressing systemic issues that have dis-empowered our young people.
