Mission Statement

Creating lasting change for children in need in the United States and around the world.

Description

The Foster Grandparent Program offers seniors age 55 years and older the opportunity to serve as tutors for children with reading challenges. Save the Children’s literacy program provides children in kindergarten through sixth grade with the extra adult support to improve their reading achievement. Foster Grandparent volunteers will assist children in acquiring the reading skills needed to become proficient readers. The hallmark of our literacy initiative is the Literacy Block, which consists of an hour of activities that support increased reading achievement including guided independent reading practice, fluency-building support and listening to books read aloud. Grandparents serve 15 to 30 hours a week, normally 4 hours a day Monday through Thursday serving children with one-on-one support. Other benefits include tax free hourly stipend, reimbursement for transportation, in-service meals, an annual physical, accident and liability insurance while on duty.
