Mission Statement

Generation Citizen (GC) works to ensure that every student in the United States receives an effective action civics education, which provides them with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in our democracy as active citizens. We envision a country of young people working as active and effective citizens to collectively rebuild ourAmerican democracy.

Description

Generation Citizen is a national civic-education organization working in the Bay Area. We place college student volunteers, called "Democracy Coaches," into middle- and high-school classrooms to teach an innovative action civics curriculum.

Throughout the course of a semester, students identify a community issue, then design and take action on a plan to address it. Past classrooms have focused on issues including gang violence, immigration, teen jobs, and health care. They have met with legislators, written op-eds, built partnerships with local organizations, and produced documentaries.

Generation Citizen Bay Area's college chapters currently include: San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco and University of California Berkeley.
