Mission Statement

StreetSquash Newark was established in 2012 to extend StreetSquash’s model of long-term intensive support to children in Newark, New Jersey public schools. The program is the first Urban Squash program in New Jersey.

Description

Students recruited in middle school are expected to commit to the program through college graduation, for up to 11 years. For the duration of the school year, After School Program students attend 4 weekly sessions: 2 After-School Sessions, 1 session of Literacy Enrichment/College Prep, and 1 Saturday Session.

  • After-School Sessions: minimum 75 minutes homework help and maximum 75 minutes of squash training.
  • Literacy Enrichment (Middle School): 75 minutes of subject-based learning, arts enrichment, & 75 minutes of squash training on Fridays.
  • Saturday Session: 75+ minutes squash training and match play. Saturdays are also time for team members to perform community service and take field trips.
  • Team Trips: weekend excursions to visit new communities, for squash and cultural exposure.
