Green Star's Zero Waste Committee encompasses some of our efforts to reduce our overall amount of waste in the Fairbanks North Star Borough and divert what we can from the landfill beyond electronics recycling. Our Zero Waste Committee helps coordinate our event recycling services, which we provide for several big community events like the Midnight Sun Festival and the Tanana Valley State Fair. We are expanding to work on other waste reduction initiatives, including hosting Repair Cafes and making reusable produce bags from donated cloth to give away for free at public events. If any of these projects interest you, or you have other waste reduction project ideas, join our next committee meeting to share! The Zero Waste Committee meets on the second Monday of every month from 1-2PM at our warehouse.

Green Star of Interior Alaska is the leading voice for Interior Alaskans in the quest to Reduce waste wherever possible, Reuse things which can be reused and Recycle everything else. We have a very long track record of putting words into action with programs like ReUse IT, Reboot IT, Rebuild IT and Repair IT - four programs designed to give new life to computers and laptops which would otherwise have wound up in landfills. We also recycle electronics, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and more. In addition, we currently operate the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Central Recycling Facility (CRF). We additionally serve the community through educational outreach and programs designed to foster grass roots support of our mission to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, as well as providing event recycling program and collection services throughout the year. We are currently looking for help entering data from paper forms into a spreadsheet. For many years our activities have been documented on paper. We are trying to make that less so, and need someone attentive to detail, comfortable working on a computer and interested in helping. No spreadsheet or database skills are required. This is just a data entry volunteer role.

Please arrive just before Noon pm to receive information about the day's tasks. Training is provided on site. The following are some of the volunteer tasks at our E-Recycling weekend: - Cutting cords off devices & sorting them - Unloading electronics from totes - Sorting and packaging electronics to prepare them for shipment - Dismantling and destroying computer hard drives - Sorting and preparing batteries for shipment It’s only with the help of fantastic volunteers like you that Green Star can help Fairbanks reduce waste and increase recycling! Green Star's Outreach & Education Committee focuses on educating people in the Fairbanks North Star Borough about local recycling opportunities and strategies for reducing waste. The committee is composed of Green Star staff, board members, and community volunteers. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month from 1-2PM at our warehouse. In 2020, some of our goals include improving and diversifying our education materials and engaging 1,000 people in presentations and educational programming. If you are interested in either of these projects, or have ideas for new projects, come to a Committee meeting to share your ideas!
