Mission Statement

Path with Art offers programs that help transform the lives of people recovering from homelessness, addiction, and other trauma by combining the powers of creative engagement and community connection.

Description

WHY PATH WITH ART?

Meeting basic needs is not enough to end the cycle of homelessness, addiction, trauma and move to a life of stability.

After living life on the margins-whether due to homelessness, poverty, abuse or addiction-people seeking personal stability need new, positive opportunities to:

Be meaningfully engaged in their community

Learn skills to assert control over their lives

Have the opportunity to share their voice while also being heard and acknowledged by others

PROGRAM

Path with Art’s three-prong program addresses these needs by offering students:

CLASSES
Path with Art provides classes to engage students in creative, skill-building activities as part of a safe, cooperative community. Classes cover various disciplines such as painting ,photography , creative writing, music and acting and movement . In 2013, Path with Art offered five terms of classes with five classes each term. A typical class term consists of eight weekly sessions lasting two to three hours. In 2013, Path with Art classes served more than 450 students.

PUBLIC EVENTS
Path with Art holds annual public exhibits and annual showcases to celebrate student artists and their work. These events also serve to close the gap between people in recovery and the general public. In 2013, our two exhibits and two showcases attracted record attendance from the community.

ACCESS ART
Monthly Access Art events overcome traditional barriers to arts and culture access, taking groups of Path with Art students and participants to a wide variety of Pacific Northwest arts institutions including The Seattle Opera, The Seattle Art Museum. The Frye Art Museum, and Chihuly Garden & Glass. Access Art also assists arts organizations as they strive to reach underserved Seattle audiences.

IMPACT Through collaboration with social services organizations and by directly engaging local professional teaching artists as well as arts and culture organizations , Path with Art achieves its mission-driven goals:

1. Reduce homelessness recidivism

2. Break down the traditional barriers that exist in accessing art

3. Raise awareness of issues facing people in recovery from homelessness, income inequity, addiction and other trauma

By engaging in the creative process, Path with Art program participants earn and share the respect of their teachers and fellow students, gain the self-confidence that arises from creative insight and visibility, and learn to connect more deeply to the world around them. Our multi-faceted programming breaks down the traditional societal barriers that often exist to accessing arts and culture while encouraging community stability and fostering personal self-esteem.
