Mission Statement for Touchstone Farm

Touchstone Farm is a non-profit educational and therapeutic organization which fosters a community of belonging for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds who enter the farm gates. Grounded in a sense of place, mutual respect and well- being, it is a sanctuary which nurtures connections, cooperation, self-confidence and personal growth.

Through engaging with horses, farm animals, gardens, and the land itself, our mission is to provide transformative opportunities which positively change lives. Touchstone Farm offers a rich and challenging variety of experiences which includes summer camps, diverse equine oriented educational workshops and certifications for a variety of national organizations, riding and driving lessons, and specialty weekends, all of which culminate in building traditions that are both dynamic and timeless. Our professional staff passionately strives to empower individuals by healing hearts, enhancing health, teaching critical thinking, promoting personal spirituality, and fostering resiliency.

Horse Power was founded in 1989 by Boo Martin at her family's farm in Temple, New Hampshire. The equine assisted activity and therapy programs were instantly popular, a testament to the need in the community.

From the beginning, Boo had an eye toward the emerging field of equine facilitated mental health and organized the first ever "Horses and Healing" conference in 1991 to explore the possibilities of combining equine activities with mental health. The conference has occurred annually since then and led to the founding of the NARHA-recognized Equine Facilitated Mental Health Association.

Horse Power's continued growth in the 1990's in all service areas--including therapeutic riding, driving, vaulting, groundwork and equine facilitated mental health programs--necessitated hiring a full time Program Director and the addition of barns, riding rings, specialized adaptive equipment, horses and volunteers to accommodate the waiting list. The facility is now one of a select few Premier Accredited Centers identified by NARHA.

At the turn of the century, Horse Power again took a new direction by conducting a pilot equine assisted activities instructor training program. What resulted was the Horse Power Instructor Training School, a PATH Int'l Approved Training Center with an emphasis in Equine Facilitated Mental Health. The cutting edge program was the first of its kind. The 10 day Horse Power Intensive Course was soon developed along with it to meet the needs of those who could not attend for three months.

Several new programs were introduced in recent years, including the Horse Power Therapeutic Driving Club, offering therapeutic driving, and the Horses for Heroes program for veterans.
