AmeriCorps VISTA- is a part of the Corporation for National and Community Service. VISTA's give a year of service to thier communities to help alleviate poverty. VISTA stands for "Volunteers in Service to America". Its mission is focused on two areas: 1) build capacity for the organization in which we serve and 2) to encourage Community Empowerment.

Description

The Adult Education Center at STCC is in place to ensure that adult residents (18 or over) in the city of Springfield can obtain the necessary academic skills needed to pass the HISET ( High School Diploma Equivalency Credential) in order to enroll in a career training program or to enroll in college.

Volunteers will help serve part one of VISTA's two part mission- To Build Capacity. The volunteers will work closely with students and the center's Volunter Support Specialist/VISTA member. Volunteers will help students to move through the program by increasing their confidence in their academic performances.
