Mission Statement

At the City of Evanston's Office of Sustainability, we strive to promote awareness of worldwide environmental issues, as well as issues within the community. Through various events, we are looking to educate the people of Evanston about the importance of environmental consciousness. This summer, we plan to attend events, concerts, and festivals and convey the importance of recycling, sustainable farming practices, plastic bag use reduction, and many more!

Energy: Evanston has accomplished major milestones in sustainability over the past few decades. Since 2008's Evanston Climate Action Plan was initiated, the city has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 24%.

Transportation: Evanston is striving to expand its number and condition of existing bike lanes. Additionally, Evanston also has a two car-share program, in efforts to reduce the amount of vehicles on the streets.

Waste: Evanston has a Backyard Compost Program which provides 95 gallon bins to residents, promoting citizens to compost their food waste.

Food: One Seed One Evanston is a program that promotes local, nutritious eating choices. Downtown Evanston also hosts weekly farmer's markets during the summer, Saturday's 7:30-1pm.

With the help of dedicated individuals, volunteers, and residents, Evanston became the second city in the nation to be awarded a 4-STAR Community Rating through the Sustainability Tools for Assessing and Rating. This aware recognizes national excellence in sustainability.
