Fort Street Presbyterian Church

Open Door of Fort Street Church offers volunteers the opportunity to assist with human care for 2,000 individuals and families. We have operated in a church in downtown Detroit for over forty years.

Ours is a community development strategy that combines food, fellowship, counseling, support groups, education and recreation. We build schedules, activities and programs that people want and provide purposeful work around every age group or project. The dignity of work is built into everything we do and also helps to create a cooperative and participatory atmosphere.

Our Centers of Community are places that embody hospitality to strangers. Places where joy and pain, crises and peace are closely interwoven. Places that forge friendships which contradict the messages about who is 'valuable' and 'good to be with'. Places where love of another is possible, absent the division of racial and economical differences.
