Description

Volunteers manage and guide the development of the SW SEC and Elm Fork Environmental Ed. Ctr at the University of N. Texas.

The Denton Texas SEC provides senior volunteers to manage and guide the development of the Southwest SEC as well as supporting the Elm Fork Environmental Education Center (EFEEC), the public outreach arm of the environmental programs at the University of North Texas (UNT). Through its work, several thousand students have been mentored in understanding the ecology and natural resources of central Texas. Not far from the Elm Fork SEC, Mountain View College(MVC) uses its unique site as a classroom for its intergenerational SEC. MVC incorporates material from Texas Wildlife Dept. to train older adults to act as guides to school children who participate in their environmental awareness program. SEC volunteers guide children through the urban sanctuary to point out the geology, woody plants, and grasses in the mixed upland area of the campus. Volunteers are trained bt Texas Parks and Wildlife to mentor children in an "Outdoor Kids Program" that encourages young people to participate in nature, history and recreation experiences. Volunteers are also involved in "The Junior Boater Education Program". The curriculum includes a Junior Angler Program with a series of activities where they learn to cast, tie knots, identify fish, and learn about aquatic environments.
