Description

Volunteer opportunities exist in community gardening, water monitoring, outreach and education.

Local seniors have been laying the groundwork for a source water protection program in Farmington, one of 3 such programs in the state. The Source Water Protection Program is currently in place in Carlsbad and Los Alamos. Volunteers participate in the education of their own communities about water protection, watershed management and restoration and water quality monitoring. Volunteers learn how to conduct water contaminant inventories and use special equipment to demonstrate how contamination could affect a community's water supply. After completing the training program, senior volunteers will have a variety of opportunities to choose from such as a community garden, water monitoring, helping homebound elderly with yard cleanup and outreach education(an intergenerational program through elementary schools).
