Description

The goal of hospice is to enable patients to continue an alert, pain-free life and to manage other symptoms so that their last days may be spent with dignity. It is family-centered care that involves the patient and the family making decisions.

Hospice care involves a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, as well as emotional and spiritual support tailored to the patient's needs and wishes. Most hospice care is given in the home, with a family member or members serving as the main caregivers. Hospice care can also be provided in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities.

Volunteers assist by providing comfort to patients in various ways: sitting and listening, sitting and reading, offering prayer, light duties around the home, etc. The amount of time spent depends on the patient and the volunteer.
