Mission Statement

The mission of VT-STEM is to share research and resources among the university, public education, and other partners that will contribute to Virginia’s leadership in K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education through: serving as a bridge between the K-12 community and the university; partnering with the K-12 community to prepare university students and faculty to participate in outreach efforts; facilitating quality K-12 STEM education experiences; and collaborating with the K-12 community to enhance teacher preparation and professional development.

What is VT-STEM K-12 Outreach Initiative?

Science, technology, engineering, and math education (STEM) is at the forefront of our nation's agenda. Both national and global development and sustainability are contingent upon fostering discovery and development in the STEM disciplines. VT-STEM is focused on building networks within the university and across K-12 communities to enhance the effectiveness of integrated STEM education resulting in improved science and technological literacy and the competitiveness of Virginia’s students.

Description

Would you like to gain experience in a variety of leadership and management roles? Do you want to do something that is satisfying and of great service to the New River Valley community? Then become a Virginia Tech Science Festival Volunteer!

Virginia's First Annual Science Festival is fast approaching and we are looking for outgoing individuals to join us on October 4, 2014 at Virginia Tech's main campus in Blacksburg, Va. The VA Science Festival begins at 10AM-4PM, and please note volunteer schedules are flexible. Volunteers are needed from Exhibitor Monitors, Operation Coordinators, Logistic Teams, VIP Essential Service Attendants, and Hospitality Leaders. Being a volunteer is a fantastic way to explore highly visible worlds of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) as well as meet fellow Technical Innovators, various US Military Branches, Scientist, and Creative Enthusiasts! In exchange for your time, you will have an opportunity to see some of the activities, hands-on experiences, live performances, and interactive demonstrations.

In addition, volunteers have personalized credentials and as you contribute to the various departments, it allows you to have first-hand insight behind the scenes of Virginia Science Festival exhibits and gain experience-leading teams as well as acquire essential knowledge in various STEAM fields! This is also a GREAT opportunity to receive training in the required course, Title IX and Sexual Abuse on Campus, in which you will receive recognition of completion.

Hope to see you there! Virginia's First Annual Science Festival begins on October4th in Blacksburg, VA and concludes on October 11th in downtown Roanoke. Don’t forget to sign-up by emailing Casey Bailey at baileycs@vt.edu today and share the news with your friends, family or student organizations!
