The RRW SEC was organized for the purpose of addressing environmental issues and concerns within the local community,working toward solving those problems through public education/direct intervention.
The RRW SEC began upon the installation of VISTA vol. coordinator Herb Cormier on Jan.14th, at Virginia's Explorer Park. Since its inception, the RRW SEC has grown in volunteer numbers,as well as in the scope of its activity,composition,structure and community interactions. To date,the RRW SEC volunteers have undertaken the training of SOS volunteer monitors,as well as participating in conducting watershed demonstration presentations to elementary students. The SEC has also participated in events such as; the Virginia Stream Clean Up Day, Nat'l Water Monitoring Day, Earth Day tree planting w/Girl Scouts, Earth & Sky Day w/Brownies & Earth Day Summit Day '02. The SEC has participated in a collaborative effort w/the VDGIF to demonstrate wildlife mapping principles to a local 4-H grp. The SEC has partnered w/such organizations as the Clean Valley Council,Upper Roanoke River Roundtable,Izaak Walton League of America(VA SOS program),Roanoke Parks & Recreation Dept.,DCR,Smith Mtn Lake 4-H extension office, and local Girl Scout troops. The SEC volunteers have conducted trainings of the staff of Roanoke College & Appleridge Farms, & have committed to provide SOS training for members of Hollins University.
The RRW SEC currently consists of five distinct teams: the SOS/Adopt-A-Stream Team, the Trail Mapping Team, the Wildlife Mapping Team, the Environmental Education Team, and the Recruiting Team;leadership is strongly emphasized in the SEC.
