Description

Water testing in all of PA's major watersheds for acidity, dissolved oxygen and temperature and entering results into an electronic database water monitoring.

PaSECs test the waters in all of the Pennsylvania's major watersheds for acidity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, nitrates, phosphates, sulfates, specific conductance, using Hach CO. chemical test kits and state approved protocols for the assessments. Twice yearly they check the aquatic life in the waterway as well as surrounding land conditions. Volunteers enter the test results into an innovative electronic database that links citizen water monitoring groups throughout the state. The database generates colorful reports showing conditions over time along a waterway or at one monitoring site

PaSECs sponsors over 100 events, such as Earth Day celebrations, in PA communities and participate in more than 200 more events. PASEC also sponsored a statewide training and networking conference that drew participants from many other states and counties. They mobilize other community organizations to participate in environmental improvement projects such as stream corridor restoration. They bring water quality issues to the attention of their communities through recognition and awards. PaSECs make presentations to youth and civic groups on the importance of water monitoring.
