Mission Statement

East Harlem Block Nursery, Inc. (EHBN) is a grassroots education-based community organization. Our history is rooted in activism and advocacy dating back to 1965 when a group of concerned African-American and Latino parents organized to respond to their neighborhood’s lack of quality childcare alternatives by opening and operating a nursery school, later adding key services to support family members.

Today, EHBN operates three childcare centers located in East and Central Harlem. In addition to child-centered programming, EHBN continues to offer inclusive services that address the needs of the family and the community-at-large. Our teachers and staff are building on the promise and strengths of pre-school children living in the critically underserved East and Central Harlem communities with access to critical early childhood educational programs and opportunities that prepare them for lifelong learning.
