How can a low-income family prioritize between paying for food, rent, prescription medications, and incontinence supplies for their senior family members? Or suddenly cover the costs of a wheelchair, a walker, or other home-care equipment necessary to assist a loved one dealing with health challenges? What happens with the medical equipment that survives a loved one who has passed? Too often, wheelchairs sit uselessly in landfills and garages. Families who have lost loved ones wonder what to do with the family member's bath equipment and diapers that are left. YOU CAN HELP increase access to medical equipment and supplies while reducing unnecessary environmental waste. How? Come volunteer at ReCARES! YOU CAN HELP increase access to medical equipment and supplies while reducing unnecessary environmental waste. How? Come volunteer at ReCARES in San Francisco! Low-income families often must prioritize between paying for food, rent, prescription medications, and incontinence supplies for their senior family members. If they must suddenly cover the costs of a wheelchair, a walker, or other home-care equipment to assist a loved one dealing with health challenges, it can be disastrous. ReCARES often can help. Medical equipment and supplies (from bath equipment to diapers) that survive a loved one who has passed, often sit uselessly in landfills and garages. Surviving family members, wondering what to do with it, bring it to ReCARES for redistribution. San Francisco is a C40 city with an ongoing push toward Zero Waste. Landfill disposal in San Francisco dropped in 2013 to its lowest level in decades. (It had a rate of 80% diversion of waste from landfill, up from 35% in 1990) . Do your part to help us get there by volunteering! ReCARES in San Francisco open site hours are every Thursday from 10 am-3 pm. Stop by and meet the Site Manager, Steve, so that he can introduce you to the site operations and let you know how to best be of service at the site. The site is busy and often serves around 100 people during the open hours--some visitors coming to donate and help eliminate waste and others coming to get what they need. * Previous medical training/knowledge NOT required, but helpful. You can come and learn! Knowledge of languages other than English, especially Chinese, is welcome.
