Volunteer needed to become a friend to someone in a long term care facility that has no visitors. Training and support provided by the Senior Connections Program staff.

The training focuses on how to create supportive relationships and build the trust that is so essential for the elderly as they give up personal power over the things they use to control in their lives.The training is mostly interactive, interspersed by short lecture periods. The course's main areas of learning include:Communication and listening skills,Building of relationships,Delaying of gratification, Profiles of the client population,Dynamics of institutionalization, Nursing home structure and relationship to nursing home staff,Confidentiality and privacy issues,Legal and insurance questions.
