Description

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches caring adults with children for one hour each week in school. They read together, play board games or just talk. Children benefit; adults feel like a kid again.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides opportunities for volunteers of all ages to be friends to children who need extra time and attention to succeed in school and with family and peers. Volunteers 55 and older are needed to be school-based mentors to children whose teachers have referred them for individualized one-on-one concentrated time. Typically, an hour each week talking about what is on the child's mind, reading the newspaper together or puzzling over a class assignment, has a positive impact on the child's attitude about school and academic achievement, while putting a little fun and extra meaning into the volunteer's day and week. Volunteers enroll through Big Brothers Big Sisters and following an interview, references and a background check, are oriented to their local school and introduced to a little brother or little sister by BBBS staff. Regular support is available to assure that the relationship builds over time, and any logistical problems are resolved. Teachers report that children with Bigs have an improved attitude about school, better relationships with peer and adults, and improved academic performance.

Hello my name is Thomas Einwechter. I am 21 years old. I am a student at Edinboro University. I am a US army veteran. I was a 92 foxtrot, which is a Petroleum Supply Specialist. After two years in the Army I received a four year active duty scholarship here at EU. Upon earning my degree, I will be commissioned as an second lieutenant in the United States Army. I come from a big family of five sisters and two brothers. I know what it means to be there for them. I'd like to take this opportunity to do the right thing in the best way that I can. I need to get 7 hours of volunteer work done. Because I violated the quiet hours during study hall in my dorm. I am a hard worker, I can give 7 hours of my time. I am a nice caring individual, and easy to get along with. I have my own car to get to any locations, or to drive someone somewhere. Please call me anytime at 717-269-8677. I need to get 7 hours of community service before April 15th, 2014. Thanks.
