Description

Voices Behind Walls (VBW) promotes creative expression and education for youth, adults, and families involved with the justice system.

The program is structured as a volunteer organization and has been around since 2003. Co-founded and currently lead by Lecroy 'Lee' Rhyanes, the story starts with an invitation from co-founder, professor, poet, Emmy Perez, to audio record poetry from youth that were incarcerated at a juvenile detention center in El Paso, Texas. Eventually the program would grow to include involvement at other sites and programs in Texas and New Mexico counties.
