Ombudsman Volunteers help promote quality of life and care for residents in licensed long term care settings throughout Hawai`i

Residents in long term care settings have the right to: Be treated with respect. Be free from chemical & physical restraints. Manage their own affairs. Voice grevances without fear of retaliation. Associate & communicate privately with any person of their choice. Send and receive personal mail. Have their personal & medical records kept confidential. Apply for state.federal assistance without threats or discrimination. Be fully informed prior to admission of their rights, services available, and any changes. Be given advance notice of transfer or discharge. Not be humiliated, harassed, or threatened. If any of these rights are denied or violated, residents are entitled to seek help outside the facility. Long term care ombudsman volunteers can help ensure residents of their rights through weekly visits. Visiting residents and talking story helps promote quality of life for residents while providing volunteers an opportunity to serve their communities.
