Description

HayHackers is a nonprofit organization forming in Hayward, CA. We're setting up a family focused hacker or makerspace or Fab Lab that will be free and open to the public to teach children in the community science, technology, engineering, art and math skills through project based learning with the help of mentors. The best way to describe such a place is that it is a lot like the workshop area of the Exploratorium Museum in SF. Imagine something like this in Hayward CA and you can be a part of something that inspires an entire community and city!

Hayward has one of the lowest test scores in all of Alameda County and the schools are in need of support. Many families are economically challenged and do not have the skills to work in today's workforce due to lack of science and technological competence. Most people do not choose to live n Hayward.

Hackerspaces are part of an international movement, birthed from the do-it-yourself ethic, where people come together in community spaces and pursue hobbies, network, and teach and learn from each other.

We are a group of parents, educators, techies, homeschoolers, artists, and craftsmen forming a community space in Hayward to share knowledge and tools in technology, art and science.

From working in the area, having kids in the local schools, and living in this community, we know that there is a lot of heart and enthusiasm here. And also plenty of real need when it comes to a safe community gathering space, educational enrichment, and professional networking and employment opportunities.

HayHackers aims to address all of these needs through the projects and workshops we will facilitate. Tools that will present in our space will be laser cutters and 3D printer as well as basic engineering and carpentry tools. Some projects that could be made would be a robot, projects with LEDs and acoustics, textiles, teaching programming and website building.

We aim to provide a community and education to both children and their families to fill the gap between the closest local hackerspaces, located in Oakland and San Jose.

Our family-friendly facility will house two separate sections for makers: one for children, another for their family members . We hope to have a community room as well as classrooms available.

Come join something new and different to make a change in the community!
